Opus Terra is the name I give to a part of my work that is focused on sacred geography. In partnership with regular collaborators a number of courses take place in special locations. Further context to this work has been given here.
A new meeting is being gestated, under the rigours of winter and global uncertainty. We will gather in Spring, at the vernal Equinox, when the Sun and the Earth connect at the centre. Opus Terra will go to the far tip of Cornwall to there unfurl its flag. We have secured good accommodation for all participants.
Our entry point of learning begins with earth lines which are remarkably perceptible in our chosen site. Many cultures have traditions and words to describe these invisible lines. They have been given various names, such as ‘spirit’, 'dream', or 'energy' paths and assigned with various functions, all within the realm of the sacred.
Our location has two such lines, known as the St. Michael and St. Mary Ley lines. These lines cross England, passing through several ancient sacred sites. We will meet where they cross on a remote headland. Much has been written about these lines. It’s worth pointing out that although I find such information interesting, much of it is fragmented and unclear and often lacking any detailed understanding of the information carried in these lines which it is possible to map when we have the requisite skills, and the concerted focus to do so.
Without discarding this archive of information, our particular understanding of these earth lines happens through an approach that is first and foremost based on direct, first-hand perception of the reality we find there. Making use of the fact we have a number of participants, some with considerable experience, our knowledge unfolds through articulating multiple views, a collective ‘mapping’ that is able to produce a tested, cohesive and rich compound of knowledge. More importantly, our methodology is largely based on silence and listening. We walk and we sit quietly, as we touch and are touched by these grand arteries.
The Earth has much to tell us.
